So yesterday I was busy watching the impeachment trial while tweeting for updates. By the way, the trending topics tab on Twitter Philippines was filled with trial-related tweets occupying seven slots throughout the whole process which lasted for almost four hours. I must say, most of the Filipinos are interested to watch the verdict of the senator-judges.
After 43 days of trial, 20 judges voted Chief Justice Corona 'guilty as charged' on Article 2 (SALN issue), enough to oust him from his position. On the other hand, 3 senator-judges were firm with their decision that the highest magistrate of the Philippines should be acquitted. Almost all of the judges who voted to convict the Chief Justice based their decision on Corona's failure to declare his bank deposits amounting to P80,000,000 and $2.4 M. They pointed out that if the clerk of court in an RTC was removed from service because of her failure to include her stall in a market, what more the Chief Justice of the Philippines? The three judges who voted for acquittal defend their sides by explaining that his actions were not really impeachable. Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago was fuming mad yesterday. She was really scary. But I know she just wanted to be truthful with her feelings toward the said impeachment trial. As for Sen. Lito Lapid, I have to say that he deserves all the respect. I think he self-pitied so much, saying that he`s only a high school graduate and people will not believe him if he states different law. He said his basis was Cong. Farinas` Powerpoint Presentation and his conscience. Sen. Pres. Juan Ponce Enrile had a very long speech, explaining why he came up with the decision. Which I think, was fair enough.
It may not have been a very easy job for each of them who had been part of the impeachment trial, and I salute them for doing the best they can. In the end, it`s not the defense`s loss or the prosecution`s success. It is the victory of the people of the Philippines who hopes for a better government and a more transparent set of government officials. Those politicians should be more truthful so we can give them our trust. I hope this event marks the start of a better Philippines. A country we can all be proud of.

- Fun.
This blog was created August of 2008. Putting up an account here wasn't really on my plans. It's just that I was so crazy about Chris Tiu before and he runs a blog so I thought of creating my own as well. Years have passed, and I have grown yet I still keep my personal stuff here. Yes, things may change but one thing's for sure -- I will continue running this blog as long as I can.
