The first Young Communicator’s Congress held last September 16, 2011 was a huge success. There were a lot of students from different colleges and universities who attended the said event. Its theme “Academe and Media: Partners in Societal Transformation” became an eye-opener to us. It will surely help us, communicators, to propagate information which will be very beneficial not only in our chosen career path but also in the organizations that we will probably join. Also, the resource persons were so passionate. They were ready to impart their knowledge regarding their respective topics.
The keynote speaker, Ms. Ma. Mercedes Fajardo-Robles (Vice Chair, Asian Media and Information Center), talked about the connection of academe and media. There are two forms of media-academe partnership – indirect/informal or the short-term partnership of media and schools (e.g. hiring of media practitioners as teachers) and formal/direct or the long-term partnership between media and schools (e.g. media donations to school). She said that social transformation is the consciousness to reach out those financially challenged people. We must also keep in mind that we should not just aim for profit and profit rather we should give a little something to our society. For the first session, Atty. Rudolph Jularbal (Kapisanan ng Brodkaster ng Pilipinas) discussed about the major concerns on media law and ethics. Protecting the rights of media personnel, rights to self-incrimination and Sotto law were some of the topics tackled. He also implicated that the news must be true, accurate and fair. Wordings used on reports should also be used correctly (e.g. suspect, under investigation, detained, accused, convicted). As explained, digital TV broadcast targets 2012 as its starting year. For the second session, Mr. Jay Bautista of Media Nielsen talked about media research. It focused more on advertising. He enumerated the 4 R’s framework in advertising namely reach (how to reach the consumers), receptivity (how consumers will react), resonance and reaction (effects to consumers). One of the known news anchors, Ms. Cheryl Cosim-Alvarez (TV 5), led the third session. She expounded that we, students, should study really well to get equipped for our future jobs. We are very fortunate to be studying so we should not take this for granted. She then highlighted that credibility and reputation are essential to media people. The next speaker was Ms. Marah Capuyan of DZMM. News, commentary, current affairs, music, counseling, drama are some of the things being aired over the radio, she said. Radios are innovating as time goes by, she added. For session five, Mr. Vergel Santos talked about civic journalism, also known as citizen journalism. He said that in journalism, you have to be knowledgeable about different things. Like Math, Science and Economics. Emphasizing the event was sixth session’s speaker,
Mr. Howie Severino of GMA 7. He discussed further about their network’s awareness campaign “Think before you click” which aims to instill the ethics of new media. Netizens or Internet Citizens should then be very careful of what they post because one wrong click might make a situation worst. Sir Howie gave things to ponder on: to verify facts before posting; don’t say something in social networking sites that you would not do in public; try to ignore tweets that may provoke quarrels and acknowledge, delete and/or correct and apologize if unnecessary things were done. Ms. Malou Mangahas of Philippine Center for Investigative had a discussion regarding exploratory journalism in the multimedia platform. She said that most of the people nowadays are actively using the internet. If you want to share your thoughts fast, there is the internet to provide a space for your smart ideas. Known today are the SOJO or the Solo Journalist and the MOJO or the Multimedia Journalist. She also quoted that the situation today is this: “Everybody wants progress but nobody want change.” Lastly, she said that in making news, consider three things: “Is it important?” “Is it interesting?” “Is it relevant?” To top off the event, Mr. Roby Alampay, Editor-in-Chief of Interaksyon.com brought up ideas on online news. His discussion was just similar with the other resource persons who talked about the new form of media which comes up to the conclusion: “With great power comes great responsibility.”
The speakers were really amazing and impressive. They pointed out significant details that will surely add up to our knowledge. But of course, the delegates too, did a good job. Their young minds were eager to ask questions and to know more about the field of media. Though there was only limited time for the open forum, still, the speakers respond with their enlightening answers. This congress had been very informative and useful to the young communicators and future media practitioners of the country. This will be one of the tools that we will use once we step on higher heights; onto our dreams of becoming professional and responsible media men of the next generation.

“For once, for once, for once, I get the feeling that I'm right where I belong .”
- Fun.
This blog was created August of 2008. Putting up an account here wasn't really on my plans. It's just that I was so crazy about Chris Tiu before and he runs a blog so I thought of creating my own as well. Years have passed, and I have grown yet I still keep my personal stuff here. Yes, things may change but one thing's for sure -- I will continue running this blog as long as I can.
